Philosophy
Appropriateness within a building's context and an aggressive response to your program are the standards from which our design solutions are based. The best design solution is found through a deeper understanding of your needs and goals for the project. Equally important are your schedule and budget constraints, which we carefully monitor throughout the design process.
Firm Background
The Small Group was formed in December of 1999, achieving full operations during the year 2000. We are a Limited Liability Company (partnership), and operate from our headquarters in downtown Edmond, Oklahoma.
Experience - The Small Group
The Small Group has completed a number of projects since the firm's inception at the beginning of the year 2000. Project types range from public facilities to museums to historic restorations, from additions and renovations to new facilities, from master plans and conceptual designs to full construction documents. We also provide other specialized consulting services including master plans, feasibility studies and historic structures reports.
Experience
As a practicing architect in the Oklahoma City area since graduation from the Oklahoma State University School of Architecture in 1982, Thomas Small has acquired a wealth of design and management experience over 23 years of professional practice on various public projects. Many commissions have included additions to existing buildings, alterations and renovations, and in some cases involved properties on the National Register of Historic Places.
Project Approach
The Small Group strongly believes in allowing our clients to become a member of the design team, incorporating their needs into the design solution. This approach develops a philosophy of "shared equity" in the development and success of each project. It is also responsible for the unique solution to each individual project, dreiven by the clients' needs, desires and personality. Project coordination will be performed, monitored, documented and accomplished in the following ways:
Programming and Schematic Design "Charrettes"
The "charrette" process provides a venue for including the client and users inthe initial programming development and schematic design phases. These on-site meetings afford the opportunity to acquire first-hand information critical to the development of the design concept. The result of this meeting is a document which all project share-holders can adopt as the framework from which development of the design can begin.
Project-specific Website
A project website can be made available to all those involved in the design process, including those authorized by the Owner. This technology provides a project storehouse for basic documentation records to drawings, sketches, digital photographs, and other pertinent information, accessible to any authorized visitor at anytime.
Professional Resources
Our team of consultants further strengthens the design team by contributing a vast resource of experience and expertise to the engineering desciplines. Darr | Collins of Oklahoma City have completed mechanical, elecgtrical and plumbing designs for numerous projects, both new and renovations. Structural design services are provided by KFC Engineering, also of Oklahoma City. Well-experienced with the documentation and analysis of existing buildings, they are a valuable addition to any project team. Landscape architecture and irrigation design will be accomplished by Howard-Fairbairn Site Design. This firm has more experience than any other in central Oklahoma on public landscape projects. Together, this team ensures that you will receive a design that is not only appropriate, but also functional, economical, and responsive to your program and schedule.
CADD and Computer Capabilities
The Small Group operates the latest verion of AutoCAD Architectural Desktop (r.2007), and is able to provide ".dwg" files in virtually any version. Using this software as our platform, we are able to provide architectural renderings, models and animation video with other third-party software. In addition, email and internet are normal methods of communication, including project-specific websites (referenced above). Automatic off-site backups of our server provide insurance that electronic files are protected in the event of computer failure or natural disaster. |
