This view of the building before restoration shows a dated wood shingle mansard covering the historic brick facade, and painted brick. Upon removal of the mansard and paint, it was determined that the brick mortar required "re-pointing" to ensure the building was structurally sound.
The Edmond Sun desired to restore the original facade of their 1918-era building to its original prominence, improving both their appearance and the main gateway entrance into downtown Edmond, Oklahoma at the intersection of Second and Broadway. The Small Group created a design solution that restored the original brick, installed windows replicating the original openings, and corrected a number of structural conditions which had deeteriorated over the years. An additional feature wasa the creation of a photographic mural along the upper windows, which provided historical photographs from the early days of Edmond's history, illuminated at night. The lower windows have a series of chronological front pages of the Edmond Sun, from its first release in the late 1800's to the present, which provide both an outdoor "museum" of the history of Edmond and an advertisement of the local newspaper's coverage of the community over the years.

The City of Edmond desired a prominent entrance into the downtown district at Second and Broadway. The Small Group had recently completed the restoration of the Edmond Sun building at the northwest corner of this intersection, and were therefore commisioned to provide the design of the "streetscape" (landscaping, pavement and site furnishings) to complete the entrace gateway. The design incorporated material standards already adopted for the downtown area into a design solution that was unique for this particular location.
