As a requirement by the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Act, the U.S. Navy consolidated a number of training facilities to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center near Chicago, Illinois. The Quartermaster, Signalman and AT-Seaman Training Facility was located in an existing 1940's era 30,000 square foot building, fully renovated for that purpose. A 10,000 square foot addition was also designed to provide a new ADA-compliant entrance and a ship "mock-up" laboratory, complete with functional indoor ship trainer.
